In what was a bitter sweet day for the Portlands Captain Cup a tremendous turn out of Portland Members and a great number of guests descended on Withington Golf Course. This was in support of our Captain Rob Goodwyn Davey but more importantly to support Pete Derbyshire and his family in their goal of raising £10,000 to enable a room at Ronald McDonald House to be named in memory of Pete’s son Jack who died so tragically at the age of 27.
This event was the culmination of a season of fund raising headed by Rob with support from the Portland and family and friends of both Pete and Rob. Special thanks go to Cheshire Football League and Scope Electrics for their huge involvement on the day.
Following the traditional bacon butties and tea and coffee, first challenge was a putting competition this was so popular that a number of teams ran out of time before the main event shotgun start. One of the reason teams were running late was that Withington Golf Pro shop was having a 50% sale on their stock of Footjoy shoes, to say they were going like hot cakes was an understatement.
In a first for the Portland there was a beat the Pro nearest the pin on the Party Hole which was the 4th, and a DJ playing walk on music as each team approached the tee. I’m afraid I can’t remember too many of the tunes but results varied from “Simply the Best” to “Send in the Clowns”. If you beat the Pro then all four team members putted out from the nearest the pin and all scores counted.
A successful day finished with a brilliant meal and dessert followed by a raffle and auction. The highlight of the day was a raffle that had been running for months on Go Fund Me saw a signed Ryan Cherki shirt and a Manchester United Football given to the prize winners. It was no surprise to learn that the City Shirt raised far more than the Utd ball, though we wondered where the mysterious extra money came from.
Great News the team have reached and surpassed their target and as of 3!st July £11,713 raised.
The following results are only for the Portland Captains event as the Jack Derbyshire trophy is reported elsewhere.
